Samsung Galaxy S22 Series and Galaxy Tab S8 Series First Look

Samsung announces the Samsung Galaxy S22 Series and the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Series at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event. Thanks to Samsung, I was invited to the product brief two days ago and hence, I had the chance to hands-on these products before the official announcement.

This is one of the few physical events that I had attended these few years, no thanks to COVID-19. Do note that the event was conducted professionally. We had to submit our ART (Antigen Rapid Test) 24 hours before the event and had our masks on throughout the event (except for drinking and some light snacks). Safe distancing was also enforced (5 people in one table). BTW, this is the only event I attended that we were “reimbursed” with one ART kit. Thanks, Samsung.

Samsung announces its latest flagship smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, S22+, and the S22. One of the most significant features of the Galaxy S22 Ultra is that the S Pen can finally be stored into the chassis. This is actually the biggest complaint I heard when S21 was announced previously (cannot keep the S Pen in the chassis). Kudos to Samsung to listen to the consumers’ feedback and incorporate the S Pen into the smartphone.

Some of you might wonder if the S-Series already have the S Pen, what will happen to the Galaxy Note Series. Here is the response from Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Series include the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, S22+, and the S22. The S22 Ultra is the highest-end product amongst the others.

If you look at the front screen, you will notice immediately that the S22 Ultra has sharp corners compared to the S22 or S22+.

Based on Samsung, the camera module of the S22 Ultra is designed to showcase individual cameras.

If you compare it with S22 or S22+, you noticed that both the S22 and S22+ have the same camera setup and they are in a single module (as compared to the individual camera lens in S22 Ultra).

As this is only the first look and not much time to hands-on the products, I shall not comment too much on the usage. Instead, let me highlight a few features which are interesting.

S Pen (on S22 Ultra)

The S Pen is finally able to be stored into the smartphone. And I can safely say that this concludes the chapter on Samsung Galaxy Note Series as the S Series is capable to perform all the features on the Note Series.

The S Pen has 3x improved latency at 2.8ms through hardware and software enhancement. It can also support 22 languages.

Camera

The S22 Ultra has 4 rear cameras and surprisingly, it has two telephoto lenses. Both of them are 10MP but one has 3x optical and the other has 10x optical.

Samsung is also promoting its night shot feature (Nightography). I tried a few times and it works. However, I will need more tests to see if it really performs well under super-low light conditions or not.

Actually, I am more interested in the video mode as it has an advanced Super Steady System to stabilize the video. And taking video during low light conditions is supposed to be better with auto FPS and other features.

Another interesting feature is the Portrait Mode. It has the usual Portrait mode and now it has the Pet Portrait mode, and even the night portrait feature.

Application Processing and Processor

The S22 Series is using 4nm processing technology. Although Samsung is not the first to use the 4nm processing, it is the first on Samsung’s devices.

The S22 Series is using Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Singapore will be getting this version.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Series

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Series consists of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8, Galaxy Tab S8+, and the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

In terms of screen size, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra has the largest screen size of 14.6-inch.

I did not spend time with the Galaxy Tab S8. However, on my brief encounter with it, I think the position of the S Pen is weird. It has a magnet latch below the camera module which the S Pen can be latched onto to charge. I am sure it will drop off easily if you are not careful.

But if you purchase the cover, then that position makes sense. Check out the picture below. The cover has a flip that you can open up to access the S Pen. When closed, it acts as a storage place for your S Pen.
