PSA: Google Photos to End Free Unlimited Upload

If you are using Google Photos, you should have read the email sent to you. Google is ending its free high-quality unlimited photo uploads to the cloud from 21st June 2021.

Previously, only full-resolution photos will be counted toward the Google storage which user will get 15GB free when they sign up. High Quality photos are exempted from this storage count.

Now, Google has announced that it is changing the rules and high-quality photos will be counted to the storage count.

Starting June 1, 2021, all new photos and videos backed up in High quality will count toward the free 15 GB of storage that comes with your Google Account or any additional storage you may have purchased, the same way other Google services like Google Drive and Gmail already do.

This is really sad news to Google users who have been enjoying this unlimited storage for a long time. Thankfully, all photos and videos you back up in High quality before June 1, 2021 are exempt from this change and will not count toward your Google Account storage. This includes all of your existing content uploaded in High quality.
