DJI Ready to Enter Action Camera Market?

DJI has been well known for its drones and recently, pocket gimbal like the DJI Osmo Pocket. Now, there are leaks indicating that they might have entered the action camera market.

Leaks have surfaced over the week or so and recently, pictures of product have been circulating on the Internet. Check them out.

Based on the leaked pictures, DJI might be naming it the DJI Osmo Action.

Look at the picture below, the front seems to have a screen which, if it is true, is great for vloggers to use it for content creation. Notice that there is a battery indicator on the front?

And on the back, it has quite a large screen.

On the top, it has a record button and a power/disp button. The rest seems to be an indicator light and a microphone.

On the bottom, there is a latch that might be the SD card storage or even the battery compartment for replaceable battery.

Unfortunately, I don’t see a tripod hole which might only mean that you have to buy more DJI accessories.

There are two buttons on one side but not sure what they do. And on the other side, it seems to have a microphone and another physical selector or lock.

These are the oblique views of the DJI Action. I am wondering if there is any feature on the ring around the lens.

Are you excited about it? Actually, I am really excited about this product. With the Osmo Pocket, I could really “up the game” in terms of cinematic video.

However, the Osmo Pocket is not waterproof or rugged enough. With the look of this DJI Action camera, I really think that it might be the best of both worlds.

However, I do have doubts like how is the image stabilization? Will it be using only digital stabilization or will it be “hiding” a mechanical gimbal inside the small body?

Here are the leaked specs but do take them with a grain of salt.

  • 1/2.3″ 12-megapixel Sony CMOS sensor (Sony IMX377)
  • Ambarella H2 image processor
  • Field of view: 145° f/2.8
  • Shutter speed: 1/8000-120s
  • Video: 4K60p with 8x slow motion, HDR and automatic timelapse.
  • Shooting modes: Single, AEB continuous shooting, countdown shooting, multiple continuous shooting and interval shooting.

Now, who are the direct competitors for this product? It has to be GoPro (and many other smaller players in the Chinese market).

Remember how GoPro wanted to get into the drone market but end up not doing well. This time, DJI is going into a market that GoPro has been particularly strong in it. Who will win? Maybe, we just need to wait 2 days to get that answer.

DJI has set a countdown clock on their website with the tagline “Unleash Your Other Side”.
