First Look: Canon RAYO S1 mini projector

Canon launches their latest mini projector, the RAYO S1. It will be available from 11th December in Singapore at S$599. I was glad to be able to play with it for a while during Canon’s dinner session.

First impression of this Canon RAYO S1 mini projector – It is super small size. It weighs only 240g and has a battery life of 120 mins (2 hours). With a built-in browser, you don’t even need a smartphone connection once you are connected (via WiFi) to the Internet.

Some highlights of this mini projector:

  • Super small size and light
  • Has a 2 hours battery life (3.7v, 3,800mAh)
  • Can be used as a portable battery charger.
  • Has built-in speaker for teleconferencing as it has a built-in mic.
  • Can be used with iOS (Airplay) or Android (I used Huawei MirrorShare and Samsung Smart View without issues).
  • Has 20,000 hours of lamp life (it is using LED)
  • Can browse the Internet without a smartphone.

You can check out the list of specs in the Press Release. Here are some shots of the RAYO S1 mini projector.

To navigate, Canon has placed a touchpad on top of it. Very convenient.

The sides are clean. There is a built-in fan and I believe it is blowing downwards. BTW, I don’t feel the heat even though I used it for, maybe, 15 minutes.

On the back, it has the power connector (Micro USB), USB port, 3.5mm jack (output), Microphone and On/Off switch.

Pardon the lousy quality of the picture. Here is the closer look at the back connectors.

Connecting the RAYO S1 to the smartphone is quite straightforward.

For iOS, you need to detect it via WiFi and then connect it using AirPlay.

For Android, I used Smart View (Samsung) and MirrorShare (Huawei) to detect and connect immediately.

The sound quality is surprisingly OK (I was in a very noisy environment). I need to confirm if it is a stereo or mono speaker as the specs show a mono speaker while the Press Release says that it is a stereo speaker. It sounds stereo though.

Navigating the menu is easy as it has a touchpad. And overall, I love the built. Canon has actually squeezed so many things into this small body.

BTW, it has a tripod screw port at the bottom of it. I forgot to take a picture of it. In my opinion, you can actually watch a movie on the bed by projecting it to the ceiling. And since it can also be powered by a portable battery, battery life should not be a big issue.

I have yet to try it thoroughly. Will update again if I can do a proper review. Here is the Press Release.
