What’s Next for Huawei with Leica? (video)

Yesterday, at Huawei’s Beijing Research Center, we had an interesting discussion with Mr. Li Chang Zhu, Vice President, Handset Business, Huawei Consumer Business Group, especially on the relationship of Huawei with Leica.

This is Mr. Li.

As you may know, Huawei has been using Leica’s lens on their flagship models since the Huawei P9 (i.e. Huawei Mate 9, Huawei P10, P10 Plus).

And with every new flagship model released, there are always improvements. For example, on Mate 9, it has a 20 MPX monochrome lens and 2x Hybrid Zoom with OIS.

On the Huawei P10, we get larger aperture (good for low light photography) and Leica Style Portrait with the dual lens.

For the past few days, we have been digging for more information on their next flagship model, the Huawei Mate 10, which will be unveiled during the 16th October event in Munich.

They were super tight-lipped. There is no way to get information from them. During the sharing session with Mr. Li, we tried again. As usual, we can’t get any information on Mate 10.

However, what we know is that the relationship of Huawei with Leica is not just putting a brand on the lens. It involves a lot of testing with the stringent standards from Leica.

And what we understand is that Huawei is already working on new features for future phones. For example, Mr. Li mentioned about optical zoom and etc.

I remembered seeing a teaser clip promoting the Huawei Mate 10 event (on the dual lens) on Facebook. Although in split seconds, I could see a dual lens system that resembles a zoom lens.

Of course, there was no mention of any zoom lens on the Huawei Mate 10. In fact, when I showed the Facebook video to my friends, some thinks that it is just a representation of the dual lens and not a zoom lens.

I am just keeping my fingers crossed because I think that when the market is saturated with dual lens, we will need new innovation to satisfy the consumers.

Here is the video that I compiled on the discussion with Mr. Li and also the dual lens that I saw on Facebook. What do you think?
