Google Translate updated with Instant Translation with Words Lens

In the next few days, Google Translate app (Android, iOS) will be updated to a more powerful one, according to Google. With the update, users can now have almost real time translation of words using the device camera, and conversation in two languages can also be translated in near real time.

This will be really convenient. I remembered my holiday trip in Japan last year ended with both parties using the Google Translate app to understand what each other was talking about. It is a very funny situation but the app helps to bridge the language gap.

Now, with the updated Google Translate, there are two improved features:

Instant translation with Word Lens

This allows you to point the camera to a foreign language (e.,g. a sign board, a restaurant menu) and Google Translate will translate it and overlay the translated language over the screen in real time, even if you don’t have an Internet or data connection. This instant translation currently works for translation from English to and from French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Have an easier conversation using the Translate app

With the update, simply tap the mic to start speaking in a selected language, then tap the mic again, and the Google Translate app will automatically recognize which of the two languages are being spoken. You won’t need to tap the mic again for the rest of the conversation

BTW, if you think that this is a first, you are wrong. Windows Phone is able to do that (instant translation) since 2012. Check out my blog post with a video on how it works. I really miss this feature.
