I think it has all the necessary modern features (like NFC, WiFi) that makes it interesting. They have ditched away the ring shutter and ring zoom and replaced them back with the standard buttons.

So, if that are the things that put you off previously, now is a chance to look at the upgraded version. With Canon N series, you will be sure that they have incorporated some interesting features (firmware wise) into the camera. Some features will NOT be found on other cameras. Read the Press Release and you will know what I am talking about.

Explore New Dimensions to Storytelling With The Canon PowerShot N100

Capture and connect both sides of the story with Canon PowerShot N100’s New Storytelling Features

Singapore, 27 March 2014 – Canon unveils its latest addition to the N series in Canon’s PowerShot line-up – the PowerShot N100, a new concept camera which allows photographers to effortlessly tell a story while being a part of it. With the introduction of the innovative Story Highlight mode, it helps photographers tell a story by intuitively creating a reel of images and video to create a customised movie. At the same time, the Dual Capture feature supports simultaneous shooting using both the main front camera and rear camera, allowing users to capture both the subject and the photographer’s emotions with just a click of the shutter. Additionally, the camera’s built in Wi-Fi and Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities make sharing your stories on the go incredibly simple and convenient.

“Beyond the frame, the PowerShot N100 will revolutionise the way we tell stories.” said Edwin Teoh, Assistant Director for Consumer Business Marketing, Canon Singapore. “Everyday, people look to engage with each other, and visual communication is becoming the de-facto way to connect. Canon’s innovative Story Highlight and Dual Capture modes enable users to tell the complete story by featuring the emotions of the photographer as part of the image, and stitching visuals together to create a more fulfilling story. This creates a visual timeline that depicts the motivation behind the creation of every image and video.”

Create and be part of the story

The PowerShot N100’s Story Highlight mode makes telling a story with your videos and images a breeze. With a single press of a button, users can enjoy the convenience of having the PowerShot N100 automatically create a movie of approximately two minutes, based on either of the three themes (Event, Date, People) selected. To include a personal touch, users can also customise their own unique story highlight reels of up to five minutes under the Custom theme, based on still images and digest movies taken in the hybrid auto mode. The camera will instinctively select digest movies of the best quality from a pre-selected set by the user, to be incorporated in the reel, thus ensuring that the story highlights reel contains both still images and digest movies of the best quality. Colour filters can also be applied to the completed story, to enhance it with an artistic touch.

Under the Hybrid Auto mode, the Movie Digest feature can be activated to capture four seconds of videos prior to the moment when the snapshot is taken to ensure that no precious moments will be missed.

With its Dual Capture mode, the PowerShot N100 makes it possible to capture a story with every shot. By effectively capturing the emotions of the photographer and his/her reaction to the scene unfolding in front of him/her, this new feature brings about fresh perspectives in capturing life’s treasured moments. The smaller image captured by the rear-facing camera will be juxtaposed against the main image simultaneously when photos or videos are taken. To bring out the best in their story, users will also have the flexibility to choose from four different positions and three different sizes, for the smaller image captured by the rear-facing camera.

The PowerShot N100 is equipped with a sharp 24mm extra wide angle lens and a bright aperture of f/1.8 and 5x optical zoom, as well as a 25mm wide lens for the back-facing camera. Powered by a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor, users can be assured of superb image quality even in low light situations. Coupled with a 3 inch touch-panel LCD which can flip out and tilt up to 90 degrees, users will be able to experiment and compose shots from unusual angles to fully express their creativity. Moreover, by utilising a combination of Smart AUTO and Intelligent IS, the camera will be able to produce beautiful and steady video clips of up to 720p HD.

Share your story with incredible ease

With in-built Wi-Fi capabilities, creative visuals taken with the PowerShot N100 can be conveniently shared with loved ones on the go. Users can easily connect to their smartphone, tablet or computer via Canon’s Image Gateway (CIG) through the cloud with a click of the Mobile Device Connect Button. Alternatively, they can also connect the camera wirelessly to their iOS or Android devices using the Canon CameraWindow App, which enables users to share their images and videos effortlessly on social networking sites.

The option of remote shooting is also made possible with the Canon CameraWindow App. Users will be able to monitor the camera view and perform functions such as zoom, flash, self-timer and shutter from their mobile devices. This effectively translates to an increase in flexibility when shooting scenarios that may require placing the camera in hard to reach places.

A first for Canon, the PowerShot N100 is equipped with Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities which enable users to link up cameras and android mobile devices easily. After an initial one time set-up, users can activate the Mobile Device Connection button and tap the PowerShot N100 with their NFC-enabled android device to launch the Canon CameraWindow app, This would enable them to share images from the camera to android phones with ease and eliminate the need to manually locate and open the app on their smartphone.

Enhanced creativity at the touch of a button

Enhancing photographs with various creative filters is also made possible with the PowerShot N100’s Creative Shot Mode. When activated, the PowerShot N100 analyses the photo to determine subjects, distance, exposure and colours before applying the ideal filter for the scene. There are also four categories of creative filters for users to choose from, which includes Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural, to create a different look for every shot captured. After an image is captured, Creative shot mode will automatically render five different variations of the shot while retaining the original image. With the possibility of 46 different filters, users will be able to let their creativity run free and experiment with different artistic expressions to portray their stories in the best light.
