Yahoo Singapore reveals 2013 Year in Review

Recaps top stories, trends and events that captivated Daily Online Habits of Singaporeans in 2013

SINGAPORE, 16 December 2013 – Yahoo Singapore today announced its 2013 Year in Review (YIR), an annual look back at top trends and stories that reflects the daily habits of Internet users in Singapore. It combines search trends with the editorial selection of what users read, recommended and shared most on the Yahoo network in Singapore during 2013.

Yahoo YIR is a distinct way to portray a society in motion through online behaviour. The YIR section on Yahoo news in Singapore offers a glimpse into categories like top news searches, entertainment searches, top viral videos and most unforgettable sports moments, based on what Internet users in Singapore looked for in 2013.

Topping this year’s news search was the haze that enveloped Singapore in mid July, hitting the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) levels in the last 16 years. The unprecedented levels of haze sent thousands of people in Singapore scrambling for N95 masks and shrouded the garden city in hazardous grey clouds. The second on top news search was one of the biggest and most talked about corruption trials in recent years, the City Harvest Church trial that attracted lots of drama and attention of online users of Singapore in 2013. The population whitepaper, hacker group Anonymous, flash floods and Kovan double murder were some of the other top searches that dominated in 2013 in Singapore.

Singaporean produced video “11 Reasons Why Singaporeans Complain!” also made it on the list after racking up over a million views with its humorous but highly relatable take on why Singaporeans complain. Epic Split and Dove Real Beauty were also highly shared, a reminder that beyond the laughs, Singaporeans do appreciate a good marketing campaign.
