The biggest photography competition in the region returns to SUNTEC City International Convention and Exhibition Centre on 6 July

SINGAPORE, 24 June 2013 – Following a decade’s success of bringing together shutterbugs young and old to share the joy of photography, the Singapore leg of the Canon PhotoMarathon will be back for its 11th edition on 6 July 2013 at the Suntec City International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The region’s most-anticipated photography competition is expecting its biggest turnout ever this year, with over 2,500 photography enthusiasts estimated to join the one-day competition.

“We always look forward to providing consumers with a positive Canon experience and this is our annual flagship event to engage photographers of all levels from professional photographers to those who just picked up the hobby. Not only do we want to identify the talented up-and-comers of the local photography scene, it’s also a great chance for the community to bond, learn from one another and improve their skills,” said Andrew Koh, General Manager of Consumer Business, Canon Singapore. “We are delighted that many past participants have discovered their passion through this event, with some even turning their passion in photography into a professional career.”

Photography for All

As part of the Canon Photography Exchange Programme, Canon’s Corporate Social Responsibility effort, the brand continues to work with YMCA of Singapore to lend its support to the less-privileged community by leveraging Canon’s expertise in digital imaging. This year, 30 participants from the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Tanglin School and APSN Centre for Adults have been invited to participate in the Canon PhotoMarathon to encourage the intellectually-disabled explore their creativity and imagination through photography.

To facilitate the participation of the hearing-impaired, on site sign language interpreters will be stationed to assist them, similar to the past 2 years.

The impact of the Canon PhotoMarathon extends across the region as well, with 11 countries, including China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, holding their leg of the competition in the coming months.

How the Competition Works

There are three segments in Canon PhotoMarathon, in which participants have to create images based on the assigned themes that will be released one after another during the competition. After revealing a theme, participants just have a few hours to photograph and submit their best interpretation of the assigned theme before the next one is revealed. This impromptu nature of the competition challenges participants to be creative, spurs them to think on-the-spot and deliver their best. The Canon PhotoMarathon will kick off at 9 am and is expected to last nine hours, culminating with the announcement of the winners at the end of the day.

Prizes of Canon PhotoMarathon 2013

Awaiting the winners is a stable of attractive prizes. The grand prize winner, termed “Best of Show” in the competition, from each of the two categories – Open and Student – will win a photo clinic to the southern-central region of Japan’s main island, Kansai. This region is home to the culture and history of Japan, evoking historical nostalgia in a vibrant metropolis.
