Urine Powered Generator from Africa

Kudos to these 14 and 15 years old kids in Nigeria, Africa. They have come up with a simple system to use urine as a fuel to power generator. Their work was showcased in Maker Faire Africa.

The girls are Duro-Aina Adebola (14), Akindele Abiola (14), Faleke Oluwatoyin (14) and Bello Eniola (15). I have seen some comments saying that separating the hydrogen from urine using Electrolytic cell requires a lot of energy.I don’t think the system is perfect yet.

Anyways, if it is naturally for a person to “remove” urine in the body as waste. Why not take this “waste” and recycle them back to something useful. I believe they have done their calculation.

According to the report, the end results is that they can actually get 6 hours of electricity using 1 liter of urine. It is a great deal if you are in a country where electricity don’t come by flipping a switch.

The system works like this:

  • Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which separates out the hydrogen.
  • The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.
  • The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.
  • This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.
