Apple Announces iPad mini and 4th Gen iPad with Lightning Port

OK, the rumors are correct again for both the iPad mini and the new revamped iPad. The iPad mini, in my opinion, is a smaller size iPad 2 (of course with slightly better front facing and rear cameras and new lightning port) and the new revamped iPad or 4th Gen iPad is just an iPad 3s.

Pre-order for both will start from 26th October 2012 and they will be available from 2nd November for WiFi only and 2 weeks later for cellular version (with LTE – not sure if it is the same configuration as iPhone 5).

Singapore will be getting the iPad mini on the 2nd November 2012 (WiFi only).

The iPad mini has a 7.9-inch screen and based on Apple, it will have the same resolution as the iPad 2 so that developers will not need to do anything on their apps for the iPad mini. Sound logical.

The weight and dimension of iPad mini: –

  • Height: 7.87 inches (200 mm)
  • Width: 5.3 inches (134.7 mm)
  • Depth: 0.28 inch (7.2 mm)
  • Weight (Wi-Fi): 0.68 pound (308 g)
  • Weight (Wi-Fi + Cellular): 0.69 pound (312 g)

I have put together some easy comparison on the iPad family (I focus only on the changes): iPad mini, iPad 2, new iPad

Overall, I think the iPad mini, with the pricing, the specs and the ecosystem, is a killer for Nexus 7, Kindle HD and basically any 7-inchish tablets around.

However, on the revamped new iPad, I feel that Apple is rushing it out to put a difference (superiority) on the iPad mini with a new processor, better front facing camera and of course the new lightning port.

I wonder what would Steve Jobs has done if he is still around.

Of course, that was 2 years ago and things change. So, he might have made the same decision.
