Canon launched a few PowerShot cameras last week in Singapore. They are PowerShot G15, PowerShot S110, PowerShot SX50 HS, PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS. G15 and S110 are two of my favorites.
Some of them are already available in Singapore. Here are the pricing and availability
Canon pumps up its PowerShot series with five new compact cameras, including the PowerShot G15 with a bright f/1.8 lens
The PowerShot S110 is the first Canon compact camera with a capacitive touchscreen and the PowerShot SX50 HS is the world’s first 50x optical zoom compact camera1
SINGAPORE, 5 October 2012 – Canon today launched five new PowerShot compact digital cameras, each feature-packed for different users, in view of the widening usage and increasing interest in photography,
“Canon recognises that consumers want to do much more with the compact cameras that they have and they will find a PowerShot among the five that meets their demand to push their creativity and quality of images to the next level,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore.
Designed for advanced users looking for premium quality, class-leading performance and compact bodies, the new PowerShot models feature Canon’s renowned imaging technologies, delivering superior quality stills and movies. The PowerShot G15 is best suited for most scenes with its fast Auto-Focus (AF) performance and wide aperture of a f/1.8 lens. Active users of night-time photography will appreciate the PowerShot S110 which performs spectacularly in low-light environment. The super optical zoom lens models-PowerShot SX50 HS, PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160—are best for those who want a versatile camera good for capturing objects from a distance. The PowerShot SX50 HS is also the world’s first compact camera to incorporate a 50x optical zoom lens and the PowerShot SX500 IS is the world’s lightest2 compact camera equipped with a 30x optical zoom lens.
PowerShot G15 – The power to capture key moments
The high-end PowerShot G15 features a newly-designed f/1.8 lens and Canon’s newly-developed CMOS sensor, high ISO speeds of up to ISO 12800 and improved AF algorithms. These, together with the high-performance DIGIC 5 image processor, allows the PowerShot G15 to focus on a subject in just 0.17 second s3—the fastest4 AF performance of any Canon compact camera – in stunning 12.1 megapixel clarity.
A display feature new to Canon’s compact cameras is the Dual Axis Electronic Leveling system, which helps photographers keep their shots levelled. Perfect for landscape photos, this feature is also useful where the horizon is not visible due to low light or other reasons.
The PowerShot G15 also ensures that no important photo opportunity is lost with the High-Speed function, which allows continuous shooting speed of approximately 10 frames per second at full resolution.
PowerShot S110 – The power to turn night into light with a touch
The PowerShot S110 features an ISO range of up to 12800 to minimise blur and noise, even when shooting moving subjects or in low-light situations. The high-image quality performance is also boosted by the camera’s 24mm f/2.0 wide-angle lens, perfect for capturing sweeping landscapes or groups of friends while the 5x optical zoom lens allows users to approach their subject with ease and provides sufficient lens compression for beautiful portrait photography. It has a 3.0” capacitive touchscreen LCD monitor which enables users to use gestures such as pinch-to-zoom and swipe to navigate.
Built into the PowerShot S110 is the Camera Access Point which allows Android smart devices and iOS devices a direct connection wirelessly to the camera without the need for a router. Users can also add location information to the images with a smartphone app5. Wireless printing is also available with any compatible
Canon printer6.
The PowerShot S110’s new Handheld Night Scene mode allows users to shoot beautiful night shots without the aid of a tripod, suppressing camera-shake and excessive image noise. It achieves the best results by taking two shots, one with flash and one without, and automatically composites the ideally exposed areas of both shots.
The PowerShot S110 is available in three colours—white, black and silver.
PowerShot SX50 HS – The power to set your sights much further
With the PowerShot SX50 HS, physical obstacles will not hinder a photographer from getting a good shot. The powerful zoom lens of the PowerShot SX50 HS has a world’s first 50x (24-1200mm) optical zoom capability and can go up to 2400mm with a 100x ZoomPlus telephoto feature. Despite the more powerful lens, Canon has designed the PowerShot SX50 HS in a more compact body with an ergonomic design for a comfortable and secure grip.
At high zoom, even the slightest movement can cause blurry images. To overcome this, the PowerShot SX50 HS is equipped with a Zoom Framing Assist-Lock button. Pressing the button will drastically reduce camera shake, making sharp telephoto images possible even without a tripod.
When a subject has been lost when zooming in, the Zoom Framing Assist-Seek function zooms out to assist users in relocating and framing the subject. Once found, the camera returns to the initial magnification range by releasing the button. Besides this convenient feature, the PowerShot SX50 HS also offers a 2.8” vari-angle LCD for ease of use.
Just like the PowerShot S110, the PowerShot SX50 HS performs well under low light situations with the High Sensitivity (HS) system, which combines the prowess of the CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 processor.
PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS – The power to travel light, look far
The PowerShot SX500 IS, equipped with a new 30x optical zoom lens (24–720 mm)7, measures 80.2 mm in depth and weighs only 341 g8, making it the world’s lightest 30x
optical zoom camera. Meanwhile, the PowerShot SX160 IS houses a 16x (28-448mm) optical zoom lens.
The ZoomPlus technology built in both cameras extends the zoom range of the PowerShot SX500 IS up to approximately 60x, and for the PowerShot SX160 IS, up to approximately 32x while maintaining high-resolution imaging performance. The PowerShot SX500 IS includes a Zoom Framing Assist-Seek button and Intelligent IS, which automatically selects optimal image stabilisation settings based on the shooting situation. The Intelligent IS is also found in the PowerShot SX160 IS.
The PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS are both powered by Canon’s speedy DIGIC 4 image processor which, together with the 16-megapixel CCD sensor, creates images with rich color gradations and crisp details. The auto-focus (AF) performance of the PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS has been made even more nimble with improved AF algorithms, improved data-reading speed from the image sensor, and revised sequences.
The versatility of the PowerShot SX500 IS and PowerShot SX160 IS extends beyond still photography, and includes videos too. With the power of the DIGIC 4 processor, these two cameras are able to shoot videos at sharp HD resolutions. They are also equipped with stereo microphones for superior audio capturing.
The Intelligent IS function that stabilises the lenses for still photos is effective in video mode too. Close up shots obviously benefit from Intelligent IS, but more importantly, panning and walking shots will also come out smoother than ever.
