Cisco Home Networking Survey Reveals
Wireless Connections in Singapore Homes Can Be Improved
Singapore, 16 February 2012 – Cisco today released the results of a Home Networking Survey on the state of home networking in Singapore that found more than half of the respondents rated their wireless connection at home as less than ‘good’. This comes despite the fact that the majority of users have a connection speed of more than 10 Mbps, placing Singapore as the sixth top nation worldwide in terms of average connection speed1.
The research, conducted by ten influential bloggers in Singapore from November to January of more than 350 participants, found that there are at least four users connected to their home network in 40 percent of the households surveyed and 52 percent of the respondents connect at least five devices to their home network. The survey also revealed that 65 percent use the default router supplied by their service provider while only 35 percent purchased their own router.
More people are connecting multiple devices such as smart TVs, tablets, smart phones, computers, game consoles and printers to their home network and engaging in bandwidth-intensive activities such as streaming videos and playing online games. However, they are not upgrading their router to meet their digital lifestyle needs. The router plays a central role not just in connecting devices to the Internet but in connecting multiple devices to each other. By connecting multiple devices to the router, consumers enjoy wireless freedom when they stream movies from the computer to the TV, share photos from the smart phone with the tablet, print wirelessly and more. Upgrading the router not only enhances the performance of the wireless connection but also optimizes the capabilities of the devices.
“The Cisco Home Networking survey confirms a trend that we have been observing – the increasing number of people and devices connected to the home network in today’s household,” said Tang Boon Ping, Regional Sales Director, Asia, Cisco Home Networking Business Unit. “Consumers may not be aware that the increasing number of devices connected to their home network may be affecting the quality of their wireless connections and that by simply upgrading their wireless router, they are set for a better home networking experience.”
Cisco home networking solutions offer consumers choices to easily create a powerful wireless-n home network that connects multiple devices such as smart TVs, tablets, smart phones, computers, game consoles, printers and more. The line of Linksys® E-Series wireless routers, X-Series modem routers and wireless-n peripherals help consumers enjoy wireless freedom throughout their home.
The survey also shows that 80 percent of respondents consider the reliability and quality of their wireless connection as most important when selecting a wireless router for the home network while only 11 percent view value-for-money as the most important factor.
The Home Networking Survey was conducted by 10 influential bloggers in Singapore listed below on behalf of Cisco. Held from November 2011 to January 2012, each blogger hosted the survey online and encouraged their readers to assist Cisco in assessing the state of home networking in Singapore. The survey concluded with more than 350 respondents.
