BRINGING A LITTLE CHEER: Philips staff helped the seniors in the older Bendemeer estate switch to energy-efficient bulbs and spent time interacting with them.

Singapore – On the weekend before Singapore’s 46th birthday, Philips staff brought its own brand of National Day cheer to seniors by “re-lamping” their homes with the company’s energy-efficient light bulbs.

In partnership with the Community Chest and Lions Befrienders, 29 Philips employees volunteered their Saturday to install new light bulbs in 60 needy households, consisting mainly of seniors who live independently in 1-room rented flats in the Bendemeer estate. The most senior beneficiary was 98-year-old Ng Ah Cheng, who lives alone but enjoys regular visits from her son.

Through its social partnerships, Philips has helped communities to make the switch to more energy efficient lighting, ensuring needy households enjoy better and more conducive home environments. The company has pledged its commitment to make a difference in the community, and since 2007, Philips has sponsored 27,800 light bulbs to more than 4,800 low-income households, and continues to champion the switch to energy efficient lighting.

While the “re-lamping” activity was conceptualized as a way to mark Philips Singapore’s 60th anniversary, it was also a way for Philips to contribute to Singapore by participating in the National Day festivities.

As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, Philips Singapore has committed to raise more than S$100,000 for three charities this year – Lighthouse School, Lions Befrienders, and Singapore Cheshire Home. Fund-raising activities will be conducted over the next five months to help raise funds for the beneficiaries. In addition, Philips also donated one year’s supply of rice, totaling 4,500kg, to the Singapore Cheshire Home. This was raised during the Great Singapore Sale through Philips’ Family Rewards program.
