I woke up today (public holiday) to the news that Osama Bin Laden is killed. It was a surreal moment because I have heard so much about failed raids on him. With social media exploding at lightning speed, how did you find out about his death?
For me, I heard from Facebook. Later, it seems that all news channel (on Facebook, Twitter and etc) are reporting on the news. Some of my friends uses simple sentences like “Obama killed Osama” which I guess makes a point.
However, with advance in technology, there are also “stupid” mistake made. For example, Fox40 reported “Obama bin Laden dead”. This is a very grave mistake.
Here is another failed report in US, saying that Obama is killed by Obama.
Nevertheless, I guess nothing beats this guy, @ReallyVirtual who live tweeted about the attack without knowing it. He saw 4 helicopters where Osama’s compound is supposed to be and one of them being shot down by enemy forces.
He also tweeted about the place being cordoned off by the army and took a picture of the empty street in Abbottabad.
There, you see, the power of social media. This was tweeted on White House twitter account in conjunction with a live broadcast of President Obama’s speech.
Here is the video.
And here is some more information about how technology identify Osama.
When his sister, who has not been named, died from brain cancer several years ago in Boston the FBI immediately subpoenaed her body so that it could later be used to identify the al-Qaeda leader if he was caught, it was claimed.
The brain was preserved and tissue and blood samples taken from it were used to compile a DNA profile, ABC News reported.
The tissue sample was reportedly then matched to the DNA of the man shot dead by US troops in a raid on bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan.
I guess news really travel fast with technology and social media. A Facebook page had been setup to celebrate his death.

To me, it is just a small chapter against terrorism. A leader is dead, but the people will continue his cause (which is worrying).
