Edit Windows Registry to Show Windows Phone 7 as USB Drive

If you are frustrated that your Windows Phone 7 only allows you to use the Zune software to add or remove files, now this Windows registry hack may be a blessing for you.

Learned this information from MobileTechWorld via Engadget. Of course, I tried it out first as I am usually careful not to mislead people.

First of all, I have to warn you. Do it at your own risk (as it involves tweaking your registry edit). The tweak is actually very simple. I copied from MobileTechWorld.

  • Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit in your start menu
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
  • Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB  (and not the other ControlSet01 or 02 if you have them) and then search for ZuneDriver

For me, I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB, press Ctrl F (search) to search for “Zunedriver” and tick “Match Whole String Only”. You will be able to get it.

After you find the Zunedriver, you will realize that it is under the Device Parameters folder. See the picture to get what I mean.

  • Go to Device Parameters folder
  • Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1 <- this enable Windows Explorer to show the device when pluged in
  • Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
  • Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1 <- this enables Windows Explorer to detect the device

In the instruction, it says that you can also change EnableDefaultAutoPlaySupport but it didn’t seem to do anything. Do ensure that you close you Zune software to see the content in the phone.

It has a few folders.

The phone content can be seen. I tried to click open a picture file from it but it could not open. Once I copied it outside the folder, it can be opened without error.

The only question I have now is where are those Microsoft Office files saved to. I could not find them. Anyway, I think this is definitely a good hack.
