Thanks to Garmin’s invite, I went to their Garmin fenix 5 launch event last Friday, held at Alter Ego at the Esplanade Mall. We were introduced to the features of the latest Garmin fenix series. However, nothing beats the joy of wrapping them around your wrist.

I am not a sporty person, just a regular person who jogs occasionally. Some may think that it is an overkill to have the Garmin watch. However, if you into timing and recording without always relying on your smartphones, this Garmin fenix can really help as it has its built-in GPS. Moreover, with its design, I think they will fit into your different wardrobe easily. With 3 sizes to choose from, I believe there will be one that is suitable for your needs.

From the left, it is the Garmin fenix 5X with a 51 mm dial size. If you have large wrist, this is good. But if you have small wrist like me, try to avoid it as it may be too overwhelming.

Next to fenix 5X is the fenix 5. It has a 47mm dial size. Not too big but also not very small. I encourage you to try it on before purchasing. Size is very subjective.

Finally, on the right hand side, it is the fenix 5S. It has a 42mm dial size and targeted for the ladies. However, guys can also wear it. In my opinion, the 47mm is perfect for me. Based on the specs, there isn’t a lot of differences between fenix 5 and 5S (except battery life). There are some differences for fenix 5X though.

Check out the specifications of the Garmin fenix 5 Series below. It is quite a long list.

Specs are just figures on paper. What is important is whether it performs or not. Unfortunately, I am not able to test it out during the event. However, there is one thing that I did check it out. If you noticed from the pictures that I took during the event, the lighting on the screen of the smart watches looked dim. I asked for a reason as I am worried how you can see the content with such dim lighting in bright sunlight.

Instead of getting a standard response, we took some of them outside the restaurant to test. Surprisingly, under the bright sunlight on that day, the Garmin fenix smart watches “miraculously” brightened up. In fact, it is one of the best on smart watches that I have seen. BTW, this is not ePaper (e.g. Pebble). Not sure how it manages it but the results is amazing. And just for your information, the screen is always on which is nice if you are always monitoring your run or any sports activities.

Everything comes with a price. If you look at current smartwatches that are available and compare it with the pricing of the Garmin fenix series, I am sure you have second thoughts. But if you scrutinize the specs and compare them, you know what you are getting.

Garmin also introduces the different bands during launch. Check out the pricing. All of them are QuickFit bands which mean you can easily swap the bands (from silicon to leather to stainless steel) without any tool.

Garmin Launches fēnix® 5 Line Of Premium Multisport GPS Smartwatches in Three Sizes

The smallest fenix 5S is designed for ladies while the largest fenix 5X comes with preloaded street, cycling and topographic maps of South-east Asia countries as well as over 40,000 golf courses around the world

Singapore, March 10, 2017 — Garmin Singapore today announced new additions to its top-of-the-line fēnix series with the launch of the new fēnix® 5 line in three sizes – the first time Garmin is creating multiple sizes of a single product to reach more users with varying wrist sizes.

Featuring the smallest fēnix 5S at 42mm, the standard fēnix 5 at 47mm and the largest fēnix 5X at 51mm, the new fēnix® 5 models are part of Garmin’s top-selling fēnix® line, a series of versatile timepieces that complement daily wear and workout gear while fully delivering on multisport features. Features include 24/7 heart rate monitoring, extended battery life, daily activity tracking1, Garmin Elevate™ wrist heart rate technology, and a host of connected features2.

“With our entry into Southeast Asia, the range of products lets us offer our wearables in different sizes to fit the Asian wrist sizes, which tend to be smaller. That is why we have designed the new line of fēnix 5 watches to fit every wrist and a wide range of sports and fitness activities,” said Mr. Engelhard (Al) Sundoro, Managing Director, Garmin South Asia/ India Region. “This is the first time Garmin has created a variety of sizes for one product so now users don’t have to compromise between getting the features they want and wearing a watch that fits.”

Multisport features for all fēnix 5 models

The fēnix 5 models come preloaded with full multisport features including running, hiking, swimming and biking. With built-in wrist heart rate technology Garmin Elevate, users get 24/7 heart rate monitoring whether resting or at the gym and without the hassle of a chest strap. In addition to the wide variety of sport profiles, the fēnix 5 models have daily activity tracking, so users can wear their fēnix as a daily timepiece and a rugged training tool. The Sapphire editions also offer a scratch-resistant lens for outdoor challenges.

Built-in navigation features include a 3-axis compass, gyroscope and barometric altimeter, as well as GPS and GLONASS support to track in more challenging environments than with GPS alone. Users can also keep their training stats right at their fingertips with a performance widget that shows training status, training load and more.
Each of the new fēnix 5 models is water rated to 100 meters3, and are built to withstand the elements with a stainless steel bezel, buttons and rear case. Users can also take advantage of the UltraTrac™ power saver mode to extend battery life even more.

Smart notifications and customization

In addition to the multiport features, the fēnix 5S, 5 and 5X boast a variety of connected features. When paired with a compatible smartphone, users can get calls, text and app notifications right on their wrist. All fēnix 5 models are compatible with Garmin’s Connect IQ Store so users can customize their watch with apps, widgets, data fields and watch faces. To take watch faces one step further, fēnix 5 watches are compatible with the Face-It app, so users can set their favorite photo as their watch face. Sapphire models are Wi-Fi® Enabled, so users can connect their watch to their home network for automatic uploads to Garmin Connect™ when within range.

During an activity, easy-to-read guidance cues for upcoming turns are displayed as banners on the watch so users are always aware of their route.

Additionally, fēnix 5X users can use the Around Me map mode to see different points of interest, waypoints and other map objects within the user’s range to alert them to their surroundings.
