Xiaomi Launches Mi 5s, Mi 5s Plus and Mi TV 3s

Xiaomi recently launched three products in China. They are the Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus and the Mi TV 3s. One of the innovation on the Mi 5s is the new under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology that eliminates the need for a physical button to sense your fingerprint. And on Mi 5s Plus, it comes with rear dual camera system. One camera captures in color while the other only in black and white, resulting in photos with finer details and less noise.

On the Press Release, it only states that the Mi 5s has a Sony IMX378 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor. Not sure if Mi 5s Plus is using the same sensor or not. If both phones are using, I am sure the quality of the photos will be good as this sensor size is similar to most compact cameras.

Xiaomi also launches the latest Mi TV 3s with a built-in deep learning AI system developed in-house by a Xiaomi R&D team.

Unfortunately, it will not come to Singapore. Please read the Press Release for more information including their availability and pricing.

Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus will be available starting 29 September in China from RMB 1999 and RMB 2299 respectively. The 65-inch and 55-inch Mi TV 3s will be available in China on the same day, priced at RMB 4999 and RMB 3499 respectively.

Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus: a photographer’s dream come true

Mi 5s has a beautifully-crafted brushed metal unibody with a seamless, button-free front design, enabled by the use of a new under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology. This technology recognises a 3D map of each user’s fingerprint through ultrasonic waves, making it possible to scan under materials such as glass, removing the need for a physical button on the front of Mi 5s.

Using the latest Sony IMX378 1/2.3″ CMOS sensor with larger 1.55um pixels – the same sensor size in many compact digital cameras – Mi 5s has a rear camera that is able to capture more light and take stunning photos with clearer details and vibrant colours.

Mi 5s is equipped with the latest Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 821 processor, high-speed LPDDR4 RAM and UFS 2.0 internal storage for a fast and powerful experience. It has a vibrant 600-nit display, and supports 4G+ 3xCA LTE carrier aggregation.

In addition to a larger 5.7-inch screen, Mi 5s Plus comes with a dual-camera system for incredible image quality. Between the two 13-megapixel sensors, one captures in colour while the other only in black and white. The two sensors work together to improve image quality, resulting in photos with finer details and less noise.

Mi 5s Plus is powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 821 processor that has a maximum clock speed of 2.35GHz, as well as up to 6GB LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.0 internal storage. Together, these allow Mi 5s Plus to achieve an impressive Antutu score of 164,119.

Mi TV 3s: The smartest Mi TV ever, with wireless satellite speakers

Xiaomi also unveiled Mi TV 3s today, the first Mi TV with a built-in deep learning AI system developed inhouse by a Xiaomi R&D team. The system is able to intelligently classify content and learn from the preferences of individual users, resulting in personalised recommendations that allow for effortless discovery of new content.

This is particularly useful as Mi TV now features even more content. Xiaomi announced today a new content partnership with Tencent Video, alongside its existing partners iQiyi and Youku, resulting in 1.8 times more content on Mi TV as compared to six months before.

iQiyi, Youku and Tencent are the top three video sites in China. According to data from market research firm iResearch, these three account for 80% of the content watched daily by viewers among the top 10 video sites. Xiaomi invested in iQiyi and Youku two years ago, marking a significant step forward in its content ambitions. Today, it has a solid library of content that far exceeds its industry peers.

Xiaomi revealed today that it has sold over 15 million units of Mi TV and Mi Box. With a 68% “homes using television” rate, far exceeding the 56% average chalked up by its industry peers, Mi TV has already become one of China’s largest Internet TV platforms.

For a seamless viewing experience, Mi TV 3s is now equipped with a 64-bit Amlogic CPU and a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A53 processor. Thanks to 4K screens from Samsung and LG, Mi TV 3s displays stunning images that will transport viewers into another world.

Other than upgrades to the software and hardware, Xiaomi is also introducing a new sound system in Mi TV bar that ships with the 65-inch Mi TV 3s. For an even more immersive viewing experience, users can opt for the higher-end Mi TV 3s model, which includes a 65-inch screen, Mi TV bar, two 5GHz wireless satellite surround speakers and an upgraded subwoofer for RMB 5999. This will go on sale in China starting November.
