Bigger and Better Singapore Design Week 2016 with over 100 Design Events and Activities

Design and Make Fair and signature event Innovation by Design Conference make their debut

Singapore, 18 February 2016 – Come March, Singaporeans and international visitors will be able to immerse themselves in a diverse range of more than 100 design events and programmes. Expected to be the largest edition yet, the Singapore Design Week (SDW) 2016 promises to be bigger and better.

“Entering into the third edition, we hope to develop SDW into a must-attend design event in Asia. The SDW continues to give our local designers and businesses a dynamic arena to meet, collaborate and speak on all things design as well as its impact on our lives. We also want to bring design to the general public so they can understand just how large a role design plays in their lives today,” says Mr Jeffrey Ho, Executive Director of DesignSingapore Council Board.

Visitors and participants can take a pick from its exciting line-up of design activities which includes interactive design installations, trade shows and exhibitions, lifestyle events and craft workshops, as well as thought-provoking sharing and discussions. Organised by the DesignSingapore Council (Dsg) and supported by design partners, the third edition of the SDW will take place from 8 to 20 March 2016 at the National Design Centre and other locations around the island.

A key highlight in the SDW programme line-up this year is our signature event, Innovation by Design Conference. Top design leaders and chiefs of design-led businesses will reveal their design and innovative journey through a series of presentations at the creative symposium. Speakers include Mr Masaaki Kanai, Chairman and Representative Director of Ryohin Keikaku Co.Ltd, parent company of Japanese manufacturer and retailer, MUJI, as well as Mr Jaime Hayon, renowned Spanish designer and founder of Hayon Studio. Through this conference, Dsg hopes to inspire deeper conversations and discussions about the role that design-led innovation plays in driving the economy and businesses.

Also making its debut this year is Dsg’s first Design and Make Fair at the National Design Centre, a unique hands-on platform for the public to try their hand at designing and creating their own products with craft and traditional materials. Participants will also be able to view the inspirations of Singapore designers and makers through a showcase.

Design enthusiasts will be able to enjoy experiential design activities through first-of-its-kind fringe events at the SDW. Urban Ventures will bring visitors through a unique placemaking project where designers and artists will work together on transforming Keong Saik Road.

The President’s Design Award 2006 – 2015 * A Decade of Design Excellence, a showcase that encapsulates design achievements by Singapore’s cream of the crop designers, will be staged at the National Design Centre. The accolade is the highest design honour in Singapore awarded to designers and designs that have made an impact on the lives of Singaporeans. To commemorate the 10th year anniversary of the prestigious award, the public will be treated to an immersive multimedia exhibition showcasing works from the award recipients.

The hugely popular Design Trails returns to bring visitors to explore our designed city. Themed “Thoughtful Designs”, participants will discover a slice of the diverse Singapore local design scene through a journey that includes stops at thoughtfully designed spaces and products. The Design Trails experience will take place over the closing weekend of SDW, on 19-20 March.

Other mainstays include SDW’s anchor event, SingaPlural, themed “Senses – the Art and Science of Experiences”, will run from 7 – 13 March. Established furniture trade show giants International Furniture Fair Singapore 2016 (IFFS) and MAISON&OBJET ASIA 2016 (M&O) will also return to showcase the latest innovative design concepts, interior designs, and comprehensive furniture range. IFFS will be co-locating with furniPRO and held in conjunction with the ASEAN Furniture Show and The Décor Show at the Singapore EXPO. M&O Asia’s four-day programme will also be hosted at the Marina Bay Sands.
