We are a step closer in creating the invisibility cloak (video)

While I was preparing to write a blog post on cloaking method invented by the scientists at University of Rochester in New York, I realized that it has been a while since I talked about the invisibility cloak. I took the opportunity to research on this topic again and I think I found out something that might change the way we look at the invisibility cloak in Harry Potter’s movie.

Invisibility Cloak in 2009

Back in 2009, Japan researchers actually invented something like an invisibility cloak but it is not something easy to execute. You will need special material, eyewear and cameras to ensure that you can “see through” the special material (in fact, it is more like projection on the material).

Here is the video of their invention

Today, many tech websites are reporting the same news. Scientists at University of Rochester in New York has devised a cheap and easy method to make an object disappear. They uses 4 lenses to perform this “trick”. They called it the “Rochester Cloak” for obvious reason.

Here is the video.

It looks convincing, isn’t it? However, in terms of application, it is not straight forward. It has to be setup properly. You need to place the lenses at specific length to get the results. Based on the source, the application can be used to help truck drivers see the blind spots.

Invisibility Cloak in the near future

So far, all the cloaking methods are non-military use. I am sure that some military organization are investing on cloaking devices or methods. True enough, after some checking (I actually prefer to call it research), I realized that the Invisibility Cloak material or technology might have existed years ago.

Here is a video (might be in 2009 or 2010) that was supposedly taken by Iraqi Insurgents. It shows a man running towards a tank that is almost invisible to the eye.

Initially, I thought that it is impossible or a hoax. Then, I stumbled upon this guy, Guy Cramer, President/CEO of Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp. His company is involved in making the camouflage patterns on military uniforms.

He has an invention that is so secretive that only a few (in the top military units of the US and Canada) have seen it, and it was actually conceptualized and developed years ago and only appear to be of interest to many from 2012. The initial name of this material is called Quantum Stealth.

Quantum Stealth is a material that renders the target completely invisible by bending light waves around the target. The material removes not only your visual, infrared (night vision) and thermal signatures but also the target’s shadow.

This is a video showing Guy Cramer talking about the technology.

As a patriotic citizen, he refused to reveal anything about the technology except to the US or Canada Military. This, I would really want to applaud him as the technology can be a major problem if it falls into the wrong hand. On his company website, there is a long post just on this Quantum Stealth material.

Based on the updated information, the material is almost ready to be commercialized for under the name Hyperstealth INVISIB™. It will be a commercial variant of Quantum Stealth.

I really hope to have a chance to see such technology. It will be interesting to understand how light can be bent to simulate invisibility.
