Navdy is the HUD device that makes you feel like a pilot in your car (video)

HUD (Heads Up Display) has been around for years but never really become popular in cars. Instead, it is widely used in aircraft. The beauty about HUD is that it projects information in front without obstructing the view. In other words, you can focus what is in front while receiving information.

In recent years, there are many accidents caused by distraction from the handphones (drivers texting and fiddling with their phones). Navdy might help to solve this big safety issue.

With Navdy, it seats right on the dashboard in front of you (with a flexible base that fits most cars). It projects information to a 5.1-inch screen in front, just like how pilot see on their HUD in an aircraft. Because there is a distance from the projection to your eyes, the road and the projection will be in focus.

It has a couple of neat features. For example, it only shows relevant information (it is not mirroring your phone display) so as not to distract the driver. You can use the Google Maps navigation on this HUD device and it will show in simple instructions for turn-by-turn navigation.

When there is a incoming call during navigation, it will show next to your navigation instead of killing the navigation. You can use gestures to accept or reject the call. As Navdy is compatible with Android or iOS devices, you can also use Google Voice or Siri to perform tasks like sending messages and etc.

Here is a video showing the Navdy in action.

Currently, it is having a hefty 40% discount from the retail price as the developers wanted to gauge the interest from early adopters. If you want to buy it (pre-order now) and ship internationally, you will need to fork out USD299 + USD30 shipping fee. It is targeted to ship in 2015.

I saw some people commenting that other brands already have such HUD devices. My opinion is that this is more flexible since it is using apps on your smartphones and the Navdy firmware can be upgraded easily. Imagine the possibilities of customizing or improving apps for its usage.
