Major update for Facebook app on Windows Phone 8

Facebook app for Windows Phone 8 finally had a major update. It is now version 5.0.2.0. According to the blog post, it includes a complete overhaul of the user interface, improved navigation, support for high-res pictures, post sharing, Facebook Timeline view, and more.

According to Windows Phone blog, this update is after the successful Beta App Program that they have introduced in April. With the major update, the Windows Phone team hopes to close the gap among the other OSes (iOS and Android) in terms of functionality.

In my opinion, it is still behind both OSes (although it is much better now). The question now is whether the Windows Phone team can keep up with the official Facebook app releases from both OSes or not.

For the uninformed, the Official Facebook app for Windows Phone is “official” from Microsoft and not Facebook whereas the Official Facebook app for Android or iOS is from Facebook itself. That means any updates from Facebook will be implemented faster on iOS or Android.

If you are interested in the Beta Program, you can download the app here (it will be a  separate app)
