Canon expands its range of lenses for the EOS M system

SINGAPORE, 6 June 2013 – Canon has announced the availability of the new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens to the EOS M system. The addition of this powerful ultra wide-angle lens to the existing two STM lenses offers EOS M users with another lens option to capture photos in alternative perspectives, including scenic landscapes and people in large groups.  It delivers world-class optical performance while retaining the convenience of a compact body with the lens-retraction mechanism.

“The launch of this new wide-angle lens is timely for the EOS M compact interchangeable lens camera, providing an additional lens option to the standard and portrait lenses currently available,” says Andrew Koh, General Manager of Consumer Business, Canon Singapore. “Together with the new firmware upgrade that boosts the EOS M’s Auto Focus (AF) speed, we believe users will benefit greatly from the possibilities the EOS M system offers.

Class-leading optical performance

The new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens achieves superb optical performance through the effective use of two aspheric lenses and an Ultra-Low Dispersion (UD) lens.  It also maintains consistent high visual quality from the center to the peripheral edges of the frame. This optimized lens arrangement and a special coating also minimizes flare and ghosting, in addition to achieving superior colour balance.

An Image Stabilizer (IS) has been incorporated in the new EF-M lens, allowing users to compensate for camera shake at lower shutter speeds of up to 3 stops. This is the first time an Image Stabilizer is built into a wide-angle EF lens. For smoother soft-toned backgrounds, a 7-blade Electromagnetic Diaphragm (EMD) with a circular aperture is used.

In keeping with the compact size of the EOS M, a lens-retraction mechanism shortens the size of the lens to 60.9 x 58.2mm while being carried. This compactness is on par with the EF-M18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and allows users to comfortably keep the lens attached to the EOS M to make full use of its wide-angle capabilities without any added bulkiness.

Fast and silent focusing

EOS M cameras are also capable of taking beautiful videos as well as still photos and the new EF-M lens has been designed with video in mind. By using a lightweight focusing lens and a Stepping Motor mechanism (STM), it is capable of extremely quiet and smooth movie servo auto-focusing for sharp videos without any audio interference. When shooting video, the lens’ drive noise is only at 30dB or lower, which is comparable to a computer’s internal fan. Dynamic IS is also incorporated into the lens to compensate for camera shake which occurs when the user is moving during handheld movie shooting, therefore achieving movie footages which are steady and comfortable to view.

To take fast photos, a lens needs to be able to focus rapidly and the new EF-M lens enables this with rapid focus search – focusing takes 0.35 seconds or less from infinity to 0.15m, throughout the zoom range. It also has the shortest focusing distance in its class, and can focus on subjects a mere 0.15m from it.

With the rapid focusing and short focusing distance, users can be confident that the photos they point and shoot are captured with visual details perfectly in focus. Further control over the focus is enabled with availability of the full-time manual focus function, allowing users to manually fine-tune the focus after the auto-focus is completed.

Stylish appearance

Canon has ensured that the new EF-M lens is designed to be extremely stylish. By focusing on basic lens design, the lens achieves a classic look with a streamlined body with a quality anodized aluminium metal exterior. The focusing and zoom rings also use a high-traction diamond knurl surface that feels and operates well and looks good. The graphic silver colour of the lens helps it match any camera colour.

The EOS M interchangeable lens camera was built to work with Canon’s more than 70 EF lenses with an optional EOS M mount adapter.

Price and availability

The new EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens will be available late July at authorised Canon dealers. Exact availability and pricing will be announced at a later date.
