Press Release

DBS MARINA REGATTA A HIT AMONG LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL DRAGON BOATING COMMUNITY

Teams’ participation increases by 50%, attesting to DBS Marina Regatta’s rising popularity as a premier international dragon boat race

SINGAPORE, 19 May 2013 – DBS Marina Regatta 2013, Singapore’s biggest water sports festival, attracted close to 140 dragon boating teams from around the region, up 50% from last year. This included top national teams from Australia, Brunei, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam was the guest-of-honour and Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community & Youth was a special guest at the DBS Marina Regatta 2013.

Now in its second year, DBS Marina Regatta saw increased participation across all race categories. More than twice the number of teams participated in this year’s DBS International Premier race categories and the DBS Tertiary race categories compared to the previous year. This is also the first time that local tertiary dragon boaters competed with their peers from the region on an international race platform in the waters of Singapore.

This year, the Regatta also saw female participation increase to close to 700 athletes compared to over 400 last year. The sport has also gained traction among corporations, with 11 companies fielding dragon boating teams for the first time.
