Singapore has Indoor Google Maps on Android

Update: List of indoor maps venue and official Press Release

The Indoor Google Maps was first announced in 2011 for the US and Japan market. It is finally here in Singapore. It has been a long wait but it is definitely worth it.

If you remember, I have blogged about the Nokia Maps which already has this indoor feature in Singapore. Now, since the feature is also available on Google Maps, it will be a tough fight for Nokia.

Do note that although they look similar, there are some differences between them. For Nokia Maps, you can see the list of shops like a directory (which I like) whereas on the Google Maps, it only shows the layout.

BTW, if you cannot see this indoor maps on your Android Google Maps, here is how you can see it.

  • Go to “Settings”, “Applications”, search for Maps.
  • Click on it. “Force Stop” the maps.
  • Clear the data.
  • Now, open the Google Maps again. It will show that it has “updated to latest version”.

Thanks to CNET for digging out this feature.

Here is the Press Release with information of the indoor maps venue.

Indoor Google Maps for Android are now available in Singapore

Today, we’re pleased to announce that we are extending Indoor Google Maps to 22 popular shopping destinations in Singapore

SINGAPORE, February 19, 2013: Usually when you’re inside a busy shopping mall or retail store, a common way to figure out where you are is to look for a freestanding map directory or ask an employee for help. Starting today, with the release of Indoor Google Maps for Android in Singapore, that directory is brought to the palm of your hands, helping you determine where you are, what floor you’re on, and where to go indoors.

Detailed floor plans will automatically appear when you’re viewing the map and zoomed in on a building where indoor map data is available. And, in certain locations, you will have the option of using the indoor My Location feature to help you navigate your way inside. The familiar “blue dot” icon can indicate your approximate location, and when you move up or down a level in a building with multiple floors, the interface will automatically update to display which floor you’re on. All this is achieved by using an approach similar to that of ‘My Location’ for outdoor spaces, but fine tuned for indoors.

In our efforts to provide helpful Indoor Google Maps for Singaporeans, we’ve initially partnered with some of the most popular shopping destinations in Singapore, including:

  •  313@somerset
  • Century Square
  • Hougang Mall
  • ION Orchard
  • Liang Court
  • Mandarin Gallery
  • Marina Bay Sands
  • Metro (Department store in Paragon)
  • Ngee Ann City
  • Orchard Central
  • Paragon
  • Parkway Parade
  • Scotts Square
  • Suntec City
  • Takashimaya (Department store in Ngee Ann)
  • Tampines 1
  • The Centrepoint
