This guy uses a mouse, cardboard, a viewcam, a piece of paper, a piece of acrylic or glass, a computer, some software to make a multitouch pad.

It uses the theory of shadow casting onto the paper and capture by the viewcam. Plus the software is very important to relay this information and translate to mouse move..
